My first yoga class I have ever taken was this past Thursday
in the TRLC at Stockton. The class was what I had expected; it was not too
hard, but I did wake up in the morning slightly sore surprisingly. When I had
first arrived in the room I noticed my surroundings. The area of the room was fairly
large so there was enough space for everyone to fit and stretch comfortably. Once the class began, the lights were dimmed
and very relaxing music was put on to set a mood of relaxation. The instructor
of this class began the class by explaining that the purpose of his class was
to focus more on breathing techniques. He wanted us to do the movements in sync
with our breathing. The moves were fairly simple as well. Some moves required more
balance than others. These moves , I noticed, required a lot more concentration
not only on balance, but on your breathing as well. One of the moves that
required us to balance on one foot was pretty tough for me, but I did complete
it without falling over. It seemed as though the instructor was more concerned
with the structure of pranayama in the class, which is breathing, and asana,
which is the postural sequence. Before coming into the class, I was a little
bit uncertain about taking it. However, after the class ended, I felt a lot
more relaxed. I learned that it doesn’t matter how fast paced everyone else is
going, what is important is the pace you should be going and what feels
comfortable to your own body. Because
there was a lot of beginners in the class including myself, I did noticed that
while he was explaining the moves while doing them, some of us including myself
would often look back up to see how to properly execute the moves and break
focus while opening our eyes so we could understand whether or not we were
doing the moves correctly. Next time I attend
a class however, I will understand what some of the moves are called, and
hopefully won’t have to break my concentration and focus.
